Ephesians 5:33 – However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
Hollywood’s version of love is the one that many are looking for. In truth, the love portrayed in cinema and on television these days has more to do with physical gratification than anything else. It saddens me to see programs that make it look like a person can fall in love with two or three people at a time, or break up with a person they were supposed to love one day and jump right into another relationship the same day.
I believe the Bible has the best description of true love there is to be found. There are many forms of love, but the love between a man and a woman as husband and wife is sacred. The verse quoted above is the foundation of a successful relationship.
When the goosebumps are gone and the passion is taking a day off, there is a love that goes deeper than physical desire or chemical attraction. Women need to feel secure. Men need to feel respected. It is in the nature of the sexes to have those needs.
For a marriage to survive, there must be love, trust, and respect. If you take away any one of those elements, there is bound to be trouble eventually. It is possible to have emotional love for someone, but if that person can’t be trusted when they are out of sight to be a faithful spouse and a person of integrity, living with them is torment. If one person does not respect the other person in a marriage, they will not treat them well. No one should have to live in a situation where they are constantly belittled and disrespected.
If you are still waiting for love, hoping for love, or believe that you have found true love, remember that trust and respect must go hand in hand with love.
